چکیده

An approach for eliminating unnecessary portions of a volume when producing a direct volume rendering is described. This reduction in volume size sacrifices some image quality in the interest of rendering speed. Since volume visualization is often used as an exploratory visualization technique, it is important to reduce rendering times, so the user can effectively explore the volume. The methods presented can speed up rendering by factors of 2 to 3 with minor image degradation. A family of decimation algorithms to reduce the number of primitives in the volume without altering the volume's grid in any way is introduced. This allows the decimation to be computed rapidly, making it easier to change decimation levels on the fly. Further, because very little extra space is required, this method is suitable for the very large volumes that are becoming common. The method is also gridindependent, so it is suitable for multiple overlapping curvilinear and unstructured, as well as regular, grids. The decimation process can proceed automatically, or can be guided by the user so that important regions of the volume are decimated less than unimportant regions. A formal error measure is described based on a three-dimensional analog of the Radon transform. Decimation methods are evaluated based on this metric and on direct comparison with reference images.

Volume Decimation of Irregular Tetrahedral Grids

Rendering highly complex models can be time and space prohibitive, and decimation is an important tool in providing simplifications. A decimated model may replace the original entirely or provide level-of-detail approximations. Here we present and evaluate, quantitatively and qualitatively, methods for rapidly decimating volumetric data defined on a tetrahedral grid. Results are compared using ...

Topology Sensitive Volume Mesh Simplification with Planar Quadric Error Metrics

We introduce an algorithm for fast topology-sensitive decimation of volume meshes. The algorithm employs a planar quadric error metric to guarantee minimum geometric error at every simplification step, while maintaining the input mesh's geometric consistency, and restraining changes to its topological genus, at low computational costs. The proposed method presents a new alternative to existing ...

Segmentation Assisted Object Distinction for Direct Volume Rendering

Ray Casting is a direct volume rendering technique for visualizing 3D arrays of sampled data. It has vital applications in medical and biological imaging. Nevertheless, it is inherently open to cluttered classification results. It suffers from overlapping transfer function values and lacks a sufficiently powerful voxel parsing mechanism for object distinction. In this work, we are proposing an ...

Local Mesh Decimation for Real-time Three-axis Nc Milling Graphical Simulation

The view dependency of typical z-buffer-based NC simulation methods is overcome by a polygon rendering technique that generates polygons to represent the workpiece, thus enabling dynamic viewing transformations without reconstruction of the entire data structure. However, the polygon rendering technique still has difficulty in realizing real-time simulation due to the limited performance of cur...

Feature-Preserving Downsampling for Medical Images

In the medical imaging field, interactive direct volume rendering of large volume datasets is a challenging task. Multi-resolution techniques deal with this problem by downsampling the original dataset to produce coarser representations. We present an evaluation of different downsampling filters with respect to their effectiveness at preserving details of the original dataset. Moreover, we prop...
